In 1937, William "Willie" Ward (one of the most notable Southern architects in history), designed this Greer home at 211 North Main Street for prominent businessman Richard Perry Turner. The home’s antebellum character evokes the Classical Revival style, similar to Southern plantation houses. Today, one of the upstate's most prominent homes is now on the market. The Turner House is a stunning masterpiece of architectural revere and southern elegance. Impeccably renovated between the 2005 – 2009, the home retained most of its original elements. Beautifully sited on over an acre of pristine grounds, and an easy stroll to the vibrant shops and restaurants of downtown Greer. This property was built using the finest materials available and would cost millions to replicate today. The R. Perry Turner house is an excellent example of Classical Revival residential architecture, a style popular throughout the South since well before the Civil War. The façade of Ward’s design harkens back to Southern antebellum plantation houses, and the inevitable remnant of Gone with the Wind’s Tara sifts through our memories. Perhaps the most obvious Classical Revival characteristic at the R. Perry Turner House is the central tetra-style (four-columned) portico with elements of the highly decorative Greek Corinthian order. The Greco-Roman style columns paired with the triangular pediment above recall iconic examples of ancient Classical architecture, such as the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, or the Pantheon in Rome. Additional characteristics of the Classical Revival style present in Ward’s design are a symmetrical plan with nearly identical side porches on either side of the home and Palladian windows. The home’s interior boasts a prominent foyer with a curved wall to accommodate a curved, cantilevered staircase with detailed scrollwork, cased archways, ornate mantle pieces, and chair rails with paneled wainscoting—all elements of the Classical Revival style. The charm, character and highest quality craftsmanship is evident throughout. Hand painted walls, stunning hardwoods, original fixtures, expansive rooms, and elegant appointments unmatched. Opportunities abound to operate a B&B, Inn, Restaurant or wedding/event venue. Recent revitalization and investment into downtown Greer, along with a proposed hotel and condominiums nearby make this a prime opportunity. Convenient location in downtown Greer between Greenville + Spartanburg and a quick drive to GSP airport. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this historic southern mansion!

As a licensed real estate brokerage, Estately has access to the same database professional Realtors use: the Multiple Listing Service (or MLS). That means we can display all the properties listed by other member brokerages of the local Association of Realtors—unless the seller has requested that the listing not be published or marketed online.
The MLS is widely considered to be the most authoritative, up-to-date, accurate, and complete source of real estate for-sale in the USA.
Estately updates this data as quickly as possible and shares as much information with our users as allowed by local rules. Estately can also email you updates when new homes come on the market that match your search, change price, or go under contract.
