Murray Vocational School and gymnasium was created on this site. The Neo-Classical style was created by David B. Hyer, who was the superintendent of construction at the Charleston Navy Yard and also built Buist Academy on Calhoun Street. Murray, who grew up in a local orphanage, financed the school and gymnasium at the time as a way to give back to the city. The gymnasium/shop was later constructed in the late 1940's and was named in the early 2000's to the National Register of History Places for it's architecture and historic value.
