In March of 1941 President Franklin D. Roosevelt implemented his Lend-Lease Act which allowed the United States to provide Great Britain with military equipment to help the fight the Germans in the early years of World War II. At the same time far away from the war, here on Pawleys Island construction began on a new beach home overlooking Pawleys Creek at 214 Myrtle Avenue appropriately named “Pawleys Playhouse”. The home would originally be a quaint one level cottage with three bedrooms, a small kitchen, and a single bathroom. A place where after a fresh caught Flounder dinner, the family would adjourn to rocking chairs on the porch to enjoy the cool ocean breeze and watch the amazing sunset over Pawleys Creek saltwater marsh. Island life in this cottage stayed pretty much the same until 2005 when its new owners gave it a complete renovation. While maintaining the original Pawleys Island charm, a third floor was added to include a new kitchen, living room and dining area with cathedral ceiling and wood beams. Also, an owner’s en suite, plus a large porch was added on the creek side of the home. Beautiful Heart of Pine floors were installed throughout the third level to complement the original Oak floors on the first level. On the original level the kitchen was converted to a third bath, the living room became a family room and the three bedrooms were completely updated plus an elevator was installed to serve all three levels. Attention to every detail has been made during the development of the home including installing Old Growth Pecky Cypress shiplap siding in the stairway and landing and Plantation shutters inside with Island Shutters outside. Even all the exterior bolts and screws used to build the porches and decks were 100% stainless steel. The thoughtful engineering and design of the renovation resulted in a three level home that flows seamlessly inside, and the exterior porches and decks maximize the breathtaking views in every direction. On the ground level a spacious covered outdoor patio opens up to landscaped backyard which is fenced for your four pawed family members and provides complete privacy. A perfect setting for entertaining guests with a southern Crab Boil full of all the good stuff. Also, on the ground level there is a workshop ready for any project or to get away to watch the game on TV, a half bath, an outdoor shower and covered space for vehicle parking. Just down the street is a convenient boat landing to launch your boat or kayak. For nearly 80 years families have enjoyed living or vacationing in this amazing cottage, but Pawleys Island itself has been a host for much longer. Pawleys Island first drew national attention in 1791 when President George Washington traveled here to visit the Alston family at their plantation on the mainland. Pawleys Island became a place where plantation owners could build a cottage to enjoy the cool ocean breeze and get relief from the summer heat and mosquitoes. Many of those cottages have remained in the same family for 3rd, 4th, or 5th generations. Today, Pawleys Island is the crowning jewel of the Hammock Coast with its “Arrogantly Shabby” reputation, it still provides a great escape to an uncomplicated, stress free Island lifestyle. Pawleys Island is just over three miles long providing an uncrowded paradise for sun bathers, walkers, and joggers. Myrtle Beach, one of the country's top tourist destinations and home to the Carolina Country Music Festival is only a thirty-minute drive to the north and historic Charleston is just 70 miles to the south.
