Thomas Friant had this house built in 1892. He was a determined romantic when he chose the kind of house that would express him. A one of a kind house. Using multiple architectural styles, Mr. Friant was a lumberman so he used multiple types of wood throughout. Rumor has it he blew up part of a bridge on the Grand River to break up a log jam. It is a colorful story. In 1968 the current owners moved to Grand Rapids, and became intrigued with this now empty and neglected house. They made inquiries, it was not for sale, it was to be demolished to make way for a medical building. Within the year the owner had a serious accident, had to change his plans, and sold it to them. After years of neglect it took a lot of hard work and love. And they were the just the right people to take on the task. And this is where their part of the history comes in. They got involved with a fine group of volunteer neighbors who painstakingly worked to get the Heritage Hill Neighborhood placed on the National Register of Historic Homes. Now these beautiful structures could be saved for future generations.
