Redmond earned its nickname as Bicycle Capital of the Northwest through hosting its annual bike race on city streets and being home to the state's only velodrome, which hosts the FSA Star Crossed - Redmond cyclo-cross competition in September.
Redmond is the home of both Microsoft and Nintendo of America. The number one employer in the area, Microsoft has over 40,000 full-time workers and more than 8 million square feet (750,000 square meters) of office space. Nintendo is the sixth largest employer in the area.
James Doohan, famous for playing Scotty in the television series Star Trek, lived in Redmond until his death in 2005. Portlandia's Carrie Brownstein, who was also the vocalist and guitarist for Sleater-Kinney, grew up in Redmond.
Redmond Derby Days is a community festival held every July. It began as a race around Lake Sammamish called the Redmond Bicycle Derby in 1939, and has expanded to include a bicycle criterium, parade, and entertainment stages. It also includes a carnival with rides and attractions, located at Redmond Elementary.
The largest park in the city, Marymoor Park is one of the most popular in King County. It features a climbing rock, a model airplane flying field, a 48-acre off-leash dog park, an outdoor theater, sports fields such as baseball and soccer, a playground, tennis courts, a community garden, cricket pitch, and the velodrome. Marymoor Park's amphitheater hosts an annual summer series of concerts. Artists ranging from Norah Jones and Peter, Paul & Mary to the Flaming Lips and Duran Duran have taken the stage. When visiting the Seattle area, Cirque du Soleil sets up its tents in Marymoor.
Redmond has the top rated public schools of the 20 biggest cities in Washington with an average score of 8.5 from Greatschools.org. The city is full of smart kids and teachers.

The views of the Cascades must have inspired Redmond resident Jim Whittaker, who was the first American to climb Mt. Everest. Following his ascent in 1963, he was given a ticker tape parade down Redmond Way and was designated honorary Mayor of Redmond.
