Portland isn't the only sizable city in Northwest Oregon to live. A few miles to the east is Gresham, which has a lot going for it in its own right. But is it the right place for you to live and buy a home? Estately has compiled 12 things you should know before moving there.
The Oregon coast is famous for its taffy, but did you know 60% of that taffy trade is produced in Gresham? Did you know that Netflix envelopes are made in Gresham, or that every single type of Boeing aircraft includes at least one part made in Gresham? Well, now you do.
Gresham is home to Team Quest, an MMA and fitness training gym founded by legendary MMA fighters Randy Couture and Matt Lindland. You never know who you'll bump into on the street that's trained there so maybe don't go around trying to start fights with people.
Gresham native Katie Harman is most recognized for her work as a vocalist and stage actor, but she was crowned Miss America in 2002. Some people say she stands in front of her house on holidays wearing her sash and crown, while waving at passing cars, but it's not true.
The city of Gresham was named for Walter Quinton Gresham, a Postmaster General in President Chester A. Arthur's cabinet. If you think that's little to name a town after, particularly since he never visited Oregon, you'd be upset to learn there's also another city named for him—Gresham, Nebraska. Prior to the name, the town was known as "Campground," which is an awesome name and if you move there you can start a petition to rename it that.
Gresham's nicknames include: Big Tanya, East Portland, Gateway to Troutdale, Greshamel, Mt. Hood's Hood, Lil' Greshy, G-Ham, Grumbles, The Sham, Fresh to Gresh, KnucklesVille, Greshambles, GreShampoo, and Taffy Town. Also, did you know that if you rearrange the letters in Gresham you can spell Rash Gem, Ash Germ, Mesh Rag, and Has Germ?
Mt. Hood is the tallest volcano in America to have a college named after it, and Mt. Hood Community College is located in Gresham. The campus, like much of Gresham, has some pretty impressive views of the 11,249-foot mountain, which must be pleasing for the school's 28,000 students.
While it's unfortunately named for Lord Samuel Hood, a British admiral who fought against the American side in the Revolutionary War, Mt. Hood is still a splendid mountain. It's covered in snow year round, provides ample recreation opportunities, and some day it's going to go boom again because it's a volcano. Out of all the volcanoes in Oregon, Mt. Hood is considered the most likely to erupt. The volcano's last major eruption was in 1790, and while it won't unleash a river of molten lava that reaches Portland, it could unleash mudflows that travel down river valleys all the way to the Columbia, narrowly skirting the fine city of Gresham.
Due to its location, Gresham is kind of in the middle of everything. It's just 16 miles from Portland, 95 miles from the nearest beach to surf at (Seaside Cove), 40 miles to the nearest ski slope ( Mt. Hood Skibowl ), and 51 miles to Hood River, one of the most popular kitesurfing spots in the world. It's also just across the river from Washington state, one of top 50 states in the United States of America.
Out of Oregon's 20 largest cities Gresham has the third highest crime rate. Portland likes to make fun of how crime-ridden Gresham is, even though it has more crime than Gresham. Crime rates vary by neighborhood.
Gresham and Portland make up the bulk of Multnomah County, which is the most politically liberal county in all of Oregon. In the 2012 election Multnomah County voted 75.4% for Barack Obama and just 20.7% for Mitt Romney.
Aside from former MLB pitcher Brian Burres and former NBA guard Fred Jones, Gresham hasn't produced many professional athletes. However, that might be about to change because Gresham is home to competitive cup stacking athlete Joey Cooksey. And if you don't think cup stacking is a sport you should just watch how fast she stacks them because she's kind of incredible ( support her competitive efforts here ).
Out of the 20 largest cities in Oregon, Gresham schools overall ranked second to last in GreatSchools public school rankings.
