This original Adobe single story home was built by the famous Weir Brothers. The main house has 2 bedrooms and the studio granny flat has a murphy bed for guests or renters. Located on the crest of Park hill there is a large circular driveway and a large array of solar panels and dual pane windows/sliders. Room for RV, and huge lot for building an ADU with lots of privacy! Jack Weir says they don’t build homes the way they used to, his point of reference is 6,000 years ago. He talks of homes he has visited in Egypt which, he says, have been habitable for six millenniums. They were built of adobe. It’s the same stuff Weir and his Escondido-based, family-owned business has used in building more than 200 homes in Southern California--ranging from the first two-bedroom houses he built in the 1940s in Encinitas to the $15-million, 21,000-square-foot residential palace he spent 15 months building for football team owner-turned-horseman Gene Klein in Rancho Santa Fe. No flash cube architecture here. Just 16-inch-thick earthen walls, built of bricks made of sand and clay, mixed with water and sweat and dried under the sun, treasured by Indians and the elite alike for the qualities both thermal and ethereal. This ranch style property began with a Mexican land grant of 12,600 acres in 1843 to Juan Bautista Alvarado. Alvarado raised cattle and built a large adobe house looking out onto Escondido. Adobe homes became the prominent style for its obvious benefits of insulation and aesthetic qualities. Another recent Weir customer is Jay A. Pritzker, billionaire financier and hotelier involved in the recent bidding for Eastern Airlines. The history of this land is rich. After the Mexican-American War with the California cession to the United States, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 honored all land grants. In 1872 the land received a patent by the Public Land Commission to Alvarado’s heirs. In 1886 the heirs deeded the land to the Escondido Land and Town Company which subdivided the land and planted citrus groves and vineyards. To this day it retains much of the qualities that attracted land owners so hundreds of years ago.
